چکیده

In a previous paper [J. Subotnik, Y. Shao and W. Liang, and M. Head-Gordon, J. Chem. Phys., 2004, 121, 9220], we proposed a new and efficient method for computing localized Edmiston-Ruedenberg (ER) orbitals, which are those localized orbitals that maximize self-interaction. In this paper, we improve upon our previous algorithm in two ways. First, we incorporate the resolution of the identity (RI) and atomic resolution of the identity (ARI) approximations when generating the relevant integrals, which allows for a drastic reduction in computational cost. Second, after convergence to a stationary point, we efficiently calculate the lowest mode of the Hessian matrix in order to either (i) confirm that we have found a minimum, or if not, (ii) move us away from the current saddle point. This gives our algorithm added stability. As a chemical example, in this paper, we investigate the electronic structure (including the localized orbitals) of ammonia triborane (NH(3)B(3)H(7)). Though ammonia triborane is a very electron-deficient compound, it forms a stable white powder which is now being investigated as a potential hydrogen storage material. In contrast to previous electronic structure predictions, our calculations show that ammonia triborane has one localized molecular orbital in the center of the electron-deficient triborane ring (much like the single molecular orbital in H(3)(+)), which gives the molecule added energetic stability. Furthermore, we believe that NH(3)B(3)H(7) is the smallest stable molecule supporting such a closed, three-center BBB bond.

Fragment-Localized Kohn-Sham Orbitals via a Singles Configuration-Interaction Procedure and Application to Local Properties and Intermolecular Energy Decomposition Analysis.

As for generating localized Hartree-Fock orbitals, we propose a potentially linear-scaling singles-CI scheme to construct fragment-localized density functional theory (DFT) orbitals for molecular systems as water clusters. Due to the use of a deformation step instead of a localization step, the influence of the environment on each separate molecule can be studied in detail. The generated orbita...

In situ Synchrotron X-ray Thermodiffraction of Boranes

Boranes of low molecular weight are crystalline materials that have been much investigated over the past decade in the field of chemical hydrogen storage. In the present work, six of them have been selected to be studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray thermodiffraction. The selected boranes are ammonia borane NH3BH3 (AB), hydrazine borane N2H4BH3 (HB), hydrazine bisborane N2H4(BH3)2 (HBB), lithiu...

Syntheses and properties of triborane(5)s possessing bulky diamino substituents on terminal boron atoms.

The present communication reports the chemistry of three linear triborane(5) compounds possessing bulky diamino substituents on the terminal boron atoms. Fluorotriborane 2 was synthesized by a reaction of boryllithium and BF(3)·OEt(2). Halogen exchange reaction of 2 took place by a treatment with ClSiMe(3) to give the corresponding chlorotriborane(5) 3. Addition of silver tetraarylborate to 3 i...

Exploration of the adsorption of caffeine molecule on the TiO2 nanostructures: A density functional theory study

The first principles were calculated to study the adsorption behaviors of caffeine molecules on the pristineand N-doped TiO2 anatase nanoparticles. Both oxygen and nitrogen in the caffeine molecule can reactstrongly with TiO2 nanoparticle. Thus, the binding sites were located on the oxygen or nitrogen atom ofthe caffeine, while the binding site of the TiO2 nanoparticle occurs ...

Orbital hardness matrix and Fukui indices, their direct self-consistent-field calculations, and a derivation of localized Kohn–Sham orbitals

Formulas governing fixed orbital hardnesses and their relation to the hardness kernel are derived. It is shown how the orbital hardness matrix and its inverse matrix, the orbital softness matrix, may thus be directly calculated, and then the total chemical hardness, softness, and electronegativity of a molecular species. These quantities are calculated for the molecule HCN, using Dirac exchange...
